How it works
Antivirus Zap opens to five scan buttons. Most people start with a Quick Scan, which checks Applications, Downloads, Desktop and other likely hiding places in about 5 to 15 minutes. Before every scan it updates its threat database, which combines our own signatures with the open-source ClamAV project. It then checks running apps in memory and works through your files.
When the scan finishes you get a plain list: the name of each threat and where it is on disk. Tick what you want removed and click Remove Selected. Nothing is deleted without you seeing it first.
A Full Scan covers the whole system and takes an hour or more. Browser Restore Scan adds a reset of Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Directory Scan checks any folder or drive you pick, which is handy for USB sticks and network drives. Optional Live Protection watches Applications, startup items, browser extensions and running apps, and a scheduled Quick Scan can run while your Mac is idle.
What it does well
- Finds adware and browser hijackers that macOS lets through, the problems Mac owners actually hit most
- Browser Restore fixes redirect and pop-up problems in one click
- Recognises Windows and Linux malware on Boot Camp, external and network drives
- Looks inside ZIP archives, PKG installers and PDFs
- Scans stay on your Mac, with no file uploads
- One price, no subscription, and real people answer support email
Where it falls short
- It is a scanner, not a security suite: no firewall, VPN, web filter or password manager
- The interface is simple buttons and lists, without dashboards or reports
- No free trial on the Mac App Store
- Mac only. There is no iPhone, iPad or Windows version.
- Browser Restore clears cookies, so you sign in to websites again afterwards
- Like every antivirus, it cannot promise to catch everything
How it compares with what macOS already has
Every Mac includes Gatekeeper and XProtect. They block many known threats and quietly remove some. They are a good baseline, and Antivirus Zap is not a replacement for keeping macOS up to date.
What Apple's tools do not give you is a scanner you control: a way to check a specific folder or drive, see a list of what was found, or reset a hijacked browser. Adware in particular often arrives through installers you agreed to run, so built-in protection has nothing to block. That gap is where Antivirus Zap is useful.
Who it is for
- A good fit: you see pop-ups, redirects or a changed search engine; you want a second opinion on a slow Mac; you handle files from Windows PCs or USB drives; you prefer a one-time purchase over another subscription.
- Not the right fit: you want an all-in-one internet security suite, or you need central management for a fleet of company Macs.
Verdict
Antivirus Zap does one job: find malware and adware on a Mac, show you what it found, and remove it. It does that simply and privately, for a one-time price. If that is what you need, it is worth the $9.99. If you want a full suite, look at the larger security brands instead.
Try it on your Mac. A Quick Scan takes about 10 minutes. If anything is unclear, email us and a real person replies.
